Meter Boxes
Specialist meter boxes and overboxes are used where a standard plastic meter housing won't fit, or where extra protection is needed. They're commonly specified for external wall insulation (EWI) retrofits — where the original recessed meter box ends up buried in the new insulation — and as fire-rated overboxes where meters sit inside a building or fire separation has to be maintained.
An overbox fits over the existing meter, so it stays accessible while the wall keeps its insulation line.

Meter boxes for EWI retrofit
When external wall insulation goes on, the original recessed gas or electric meter box gets buried under the new insulation layer — leaving the meter inaccessible and breaking the insulation line around it. An EWI meter box (or overbox) solves both: it fits over the existing meter so it stays readable and serviceable, while maintaining the insulation and draught-proofing of the EWI system. That keeps the retrofit compliant with building regulations and protects the building's thermal performance — without the cost and disruption of relocating the meter.
Fire-rated meter overboxes
Where a meter is located inside a building, or fire separation has to be maintained, a fire-rated electricity meter overbox adds a layer of protection. It's built to contain and slow the spread of fire, with intumescent seals that expand under heat to close gaps and protect the interior — important in multi-occupancy buildings and any property with specific fire-safety requirements. See our fire-rated electric meter overbox for the current spec.
Built to last — a note on coastal use
Our meter boxes and overboxes are robust, secure and made to fit seamlessly over existing meters. One important note: because of the raised corrosion risk, the standard guarantee doesn't cover installation within 10km of the coast — for coastal locations we recommend Grade 316 stainless steel, so get in touch and we'll sort the right option.
